Even though it’s snowing again, it’s time to say hello to May with it’s end-of-school-year celebrations. We’re already planning a few trips for this summer since we have a fourth-grader and an #EveryKidInAPark pass to enter any National Park for free! In the meantime, here are some titles I’ve come across lately and want to recommend:
- The Contemplative John Muir: Spiritual Quotations from the Great American Naturalist by Stephen Case — I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I attended a seminar led by the author of this book. A professor at a local university and an avid outdoor photographer and theologian, Case presented a convincing case for an integrated view of creation spirituality, or as he put it Trinitarian mysticism. Case is full of Scripture-inspired quotations and ideas gleaned from renowned environmentalist John Muir (pronounced Mew-ur), as well as Quakers and early American Puritan thinkers.
- Walden by Henry David Thoreau and Emerson’s Essays illustrated by John Steuart Curry — These early American classics never get old.
- Intimacy With God: An Introduction to Centering Prayer by Thomas Keating — Clear, insightful, descriptive, this is exactly what the subtitle says.
- What to watch? — Leftovers, about being a single woman in China…Judge Verda Colvin’s emotional speech in her Georgia courtroom.
- What to listen to? Finally, several of Susan Howatch’s Starbridge books about the Church of England are on audio! (Well, I guess they’ve been out for a few years, but I’ve just now realized they’re out there.) Try any of them, but you might start with Glamorous Powers.
