So besides getting back into the TV drama Blacklist, now that the third season is on Netflix, I’ve been revisiting some of my favorite books that I haven’t read in a while. Here are a few of them:
- The Insistence of God: A Theology of Perhaps by John D. Caputo — This book is actually new to me. Published in 2013, it continues my recent focus on postmodern attempts to reconcile faith and doubt. I highly recommend The Insistence of God. Both readable and deep. Caputo has a gift for communicating complicated concepts in easy to understand ways. He is also friends with Richard Kearney, so there’s that.
- The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant — This is a classic text summarizing the high points of philosophy through history. Revealing as much for what is shared and covered as for what is left out. (Should be available at your local library.)
- The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien — Glimpses into the inner thoughts and ideas of one of the most influential authors of the last 100 years.
- The Iron Lance by Stephen Lawhead — Book One of Lawhead’s Celtic Crusades trilogy is set 1,000 years ago, but is particularly timely for today.
- Surprised By Joy: The Shape of My Early Life by C.S. Lewis — One of the better autobiographies I’ve read. One of Lewis’s most accessible books.
