See familiar places with new eyes…
On your next trip to downtown Denver, Colo., consider visiting the following sites to learn about their connection to the Sand Creek Massacre:
- Camp Weld marker — Marks the site of the Camp Weld Council. Located on the NE corner of 8th Avenue and Vallejo.
- Civil War markers — A monument to Colorado’s Civil War (Union) volunteers, a civil war cannon and other markers are located on the west side of State Capitol building.
- Soule & Cramer graves — On Nov. 29, 1864, Capt. Silas Soule and Lt. Joseph Cramer refused to order the men under their command to attack the Cheyenne and Arapaho camp at Sand Creek. Many other officers and men attacked the village, however, leading to the infamous massacre. Each year, Arapaho and Cheyenne descendants of massacre survivors hold a memorial service at Riverside Cemetery where Soule and Cramer are buried.
- Soule plaque — A plaque on 15th Street & Arapaho marks the presumed site of Silas Soule’s murder.
