Just a few more days until 2014, but first, a quick review of some titles I’ve picked up lately:
- The Hobbit (or There and Back Again) by J.R.R. Tolkien — The book that more or less started it all. I’m reading it to the kids at night by our gas fire. Still haven’t seen the second movie.
- Listening for the Heartbeat of God: A Celtic Spirituality by J. Philip Newell — I’ve been on a Celtic kick lately. There’s a lot in that tradition that I like and that resonates with how I’m learning to see the world.
- Beyond Poverty and Affluence: Towards a Canadian Economy of Care by BobGoudzwaard and Harry de Lange — These two Dutch economists have some powerful things to say about how economic practice can aid in the renewal of societies.
Top 3 of (what I read, re-read or saw in) 2013
- The Intouchables — Best movie I’ve seen in a while. Watch it.
- Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire by Brian J. Walsh and Sylvia C. Keesmaat — Finally finished this book after a bunch of stops and starts that didn’t have to do with the book itself. This unusual commentary helped rehabilitate my view of Paul and his writings.
- Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion by Sara Miles — Wonderful memoir of food, faith and service.
