Writing

My blog, that is this blog, is where I post commentary, reviews, profiles and historical sketches, and where I share some things about my own life and experiences. The topics I cover here range from current events and family life to history and theology and quite a few things in between.

I’ve also completed several other writing projects, including:

The Sweep Report by Marrton Dormish, with Karen Smith. (Cover design by Laura Vincent, BOSS Printing. Cover photo by David R. Jennings, Broomfield Enterprise.)

The Sweep Report: A look at key indicators, trends and needs in Broomfield, Colorado, USA — Written in partnership with Karen Smith of the Broomfield Community Foundation, this 68-page report was published in May 2012. The eight months I spent doing research for this project opened my eyes like never before to stories of need in my community. It has since been used by non-profits, faith communities and government agencies, and has helped prompt collaboration and action regarding affordable housing and other ongoing challenges.

On the Way: Re-Imagining the Pilgrimage of a Would-Be Messiah — In 2001, I made pilgrimage on El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) in Northern Spain. Years later, I helped host pilgrims at a tiny waystation-refuge on the Camino, after which I started work on a first draft that became On the Way. Long before he became the subject of Camino legends, St. James likely had an experience that prompted him to leave his fishing nets behind. On the Way interweaves history and fiction to re-imagine what that moment might have been like.

My Prayerbook — Several years ago, I hand copied and decorated an unlined Moleskine for my personal use as a prayerbook. It’s a compilation, really — prayers from The Northumbria Community’s Celtic Daily Prayer, my favorite quotes and Scripture passages as daily readings and meditations, and summaries of prayer practices I’ve found helpful.

Powers: The Serial — This nine-episode online series tells the stories of a diverse cast of real-to-life characters here at home and overseas.
